Man charged with Gun crime for protecting his family?

Man charged with Gun crime for protecting his family?

This is B.S. This would NOT happen in Texas, AZ, Mont. and perhaps a few other states, but NY it’s par for the course.

Long Island Man Arrested For Defending Home With AK-47

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (CBS 2) — He was arrested for protecting his property and family.

But it’s how the Long Island man did it that police say crossed the line.

He got an AK-47 assault rifle, pulled the trigger and he ended up in jail, reports CBS 2’s Pablo Guzman.

George Grier said he had to use his rifle on Sunday night to stop what he thought was going to be an invasion of his Uniondale home by a gang he thought might have been the vicious “MS-13.” He said the whole deal happened as he was about to drive his cousin home.

“I went around and went into the house, ran upstairs and told my wife to call the police. I get the gun and I go outside and I come into the doorway and now, by this time, they are in the driveway, back here near the house. I tell them, you know, ‘Can you please leave?’ Grier said.

Grier said the five men dared him to use the gun; and that their shouts brought another larger group of gang members in front of his house.

“He starts threatening my family, my life. ‘Oh you’re dead. I’m gonna kill your family and your babies. You’re dead.’ So when he says that, 20 others guys come rushing around the corner. And so I fired four warning shots into the grass,” Grier said.

Now, once a threat has been issued to you and your family, I say time to get it on. However; I’m not sure firing a couple of shots into the lawn is exactly the right thing to do. IF they were on your property and you are NOT in America (Texas) You need to think out your next move very carefully. I commend the guy for taking a stand, I’d have rather seen him take the stand with a bunch of bullet ridden gang bangers bodies on the grass, because NOW, they will be doing something in retaliation. BET ON IT!

The real problem here isn’t the guy firing a couple of shots in his lawn, it’s the failure of our justice system to protect it’s citizens. Since NY has some of the most ridiculous gun laws in the nation, they bear the responsibility of protection. This guy felt his family was at risk and did what he thought was right to protect them. IF you want to legislate OUR rights away, then YOU need to protect us. YOU need to lock these gang bangin slugs up, you need to do YOUR job.

I wish the guy well in his court case, and I hope not to hear about his “Accidental” death soon.

  1. How’s that saying go…better tried by 12 than carried by 6? But an AK for home defense? The guy oughta get himself a short-barreled Mossberg .12 gauge with a pistol grip & about 6 good rounds of buckshot. And then move to a better neighborhood.

    1. Bob, I don’t disagree with that at all…But I guess if you got 20+ invaders an AK fully loaded maybe a good starter…The Shotgun for clean up.

  2. This just highlights another of the MANY reasons I live in Texas…

Rob, an AK-47 for home defense is a joke, a good 12GA trumps an AK every time for up close work…

  3. P.S. All the brouhaha over this is being blown WAY out of proportion…

I just got off the phone with a friend of mine that is Texas DPS/CID, this stunt would have gotten him locked up here in Texas too… Warning shots are NOT allowed, if your life, or that of others is threatened, remove the threat, it’s that simple…

If there’s 20 of the bastards, shoot the front 5 or 6, THAT is sufficient warning for the rest… That’s the part that our faux Conservative at LBCC will NEVER understand… Here, we CAN shoot…

I sent my friend a link to this story and several others that have used different links, and that was the general consensus in DPS headquarters…

  4. Okay Fred, I agree with that, that’s why I LOVE TEXAS’s way of doing shit. But this didn’t occur in Texas. The other part in the issue is the mans beliefs. He stated he had just came home from church, perhaps he didn’t want to take a life. I don’t know, I’m just throwing it out there. The man didn’t have “Less lethal” capabilities, so he fired a couple of warning shots. IF it worked and the gang bangers scrambled, then I’d say it worked.

I’d suggest the Judge in the state that this occurred in will be far less harsh on the guy for the warning shots than he would be if there were 5 or 6 dead bodies on his lawn.

I really don’t know how I’d have handled it. But I pretty much guarantee I wouldn’t be wasting bullets in my lawn.

  5. Ya see Rob, it’s NOT the job of the LEO to interpret the law, it is his job to ENFORCE the law… And pretty much anywhere ya go, this is reckless discharge…

In Texas, it’s reckless discharge… In New York it’s likely a jail sentence… Not trying to piss you off but this is the difference in the way civilians and LEOs look at it, ask some of your LEO buddies what this would be in Cali… And don’t be surprised when they tell you an arrest would be imminent…

Remember, Criminal Justice is my major, and even though I am way past class time, I have tons of references that are still in the groove to call up for *street level* interpretation…

  6. Yeah Fred, I never said anything about whether he should be arrested or not. All I’m saying is the situation dictated his actions and the charge shouldn’t hold water in court.

I understand that he had to be arrested, I don’t particurally like it in this instance. I think the guy acted with pretty good restraint. Reckless discharge? IMO he had three options. 1, into the crowd. 2 up in the air, or 3 into the ground. The ground being the safer of the three.

The best thing he could have done is go back in the house and wait till the cops got there. He didn’t so he goes to jail. Unfortunately, NOTHING happens to the gang bangers that started it all. That’s MY issue with the whole damn thing.
