Southern California Fires.

For my friends in other states and countries here is the latest in our area.

FIRES UPDATE: Latest numbers for Southern California blazes

These are the latest numbers on the fires in Riverside, San Bernardino, Orange, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara counties.

More than 800 houses, mobile homes and apartments were destroyed by fires that have burned more than 34 square miles since breaking out Thursday.

The most threatening blaze had burned 10,475 acres in Riverside, San Bernardino, and Orange counties after erupting Saturday and shooting through subdivisions entwined with wilderness parklands.

The fire burned 119 homes in the cities of Corona and Yorba Linda and the Anaheim Hills area of Anaheim. In addition, 50 units of an apartment complex burned, Orange County fire spokeswoman Angela Garbiso said.

A fire in the Sylmar area of Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley grew to more than 9,500 acres after destroying 500 mobile homes, nine single-family homes and 11 commercial buildings early Saturday. Firefighters were making progress Sunday and by midmorning it was 35 percent contained.

About 90 miles northwest of Sylmar, a 1,940-acre fire that began in the upscale Santa Barbara County community of Montecito on Thursday night was 75 percent contained by Sunday morning. County spokesman William Boyer said 106 homes burned in the city of Santa Barbara and 77 burned in adjacent Montecito. He said the final total could reach 200, many of them multimillion-dollar homes with ocean views.

At least 13 people were injured in that fire.

We don’t have the high sustained winds we had yesterday, but we still have the lack of humidity. It is very dry, and there is a light wind blowing with a few gusts.

Remember last year, during the Immigration protest time frame, we had a lot of fires too… I wonder if these fires are a form of protesting a perceived injustice? Just thinking out loud.

There are 2 fires burning or have burnt that are considered suspicious, some arrests associated with a fire have been made, that is on the down low right now but it will be in the media within the next couple of days.

Forest Fire Jihad Being Threatened On Terrorist Websites
    *
U.S. officials monitoring terrorist web sites have discovered a call for using forest fires as weapons against “crusader” nations, in what may explain some recent wildfires in places like southern California and Greece.
A terrorist website was discovered recently that carried a posting that called for “Forest Jihad.” The posting was listed on the Internet on Nov. 26 and reported in U.S. intelligence channels last week.
The statement, in Arabic, said that “summer has begun so do not forget the Forest Jihad.”The writer called on all Muslims in the United States, Europe, Russia and Australia to “start forest fires.”

@Ranando: You know that was talked about during the fires last year or the year before.. The Illegal Immigration protests had some fires associated with them, and in 2003 Jihadi’s were thought to be at fault, but no proof ever developed.

I wonder if some friction was at fault here Ranando, perhaps two same sex couples were so distressed over the Prop 8 issue, that they has sex in the woods with no lube… :straightfaced:

Makes ya wonder, what with all the bullshit we’re hearing about the *Flaming Queers* and all, and it is NOT out of the question for those SICK fucks to something just that scummy!

  4. Gawfer Says:

I was in San Luis Obispo Thursday and Friday on business, and Friday morning, a Wildland Fire broke out west of the101 and burning toward town. I think they were able to get a handle on that one before it reached town, but I left at noon, so I don’t know the outcome.

I drove the 101 south and passed the Santa Barbara fire, and though it appeared to be moving away from homes, the damage had already been done.

I can see the smoke from the Yorba Linda fire, and will need to use an alternate route tomorrow. I also passed the fire off the 210 Friday evening as LA freeways on Friday evenings have a top speed of 12 mph.

We’re cookin’ right now; your prayers are coveted.

  5. Robert Says:

@Gawfer: We were out at a golf course just off the 15 freeway, near Eagle Glenn. We saw the plumes of smoke, and the planes fighting the Yorba Linda fire… I have spotting scopes set up trained on the two hills behind my house.. Prayers are always thrown in your direction Brudda

  6. DE Says:

I’m sure the democrats will say that this catastrophe rests squarely on the failed policies, lies, and coverups of the Bush/Cheny adminstration.

  7. Robert Says:

@DE: I’d be willing to bet the farm on that too…

  8. Kate Says:

I’ve been worried about y’all! Are you safe? At least for the time being? If they tell ya to leave….LEAVE! I don’t want to have to ‘hop on a plane’ and come over there to smack ya! :worried:

Robert – prayers to you and all the bloggin’ buds out there. Keep your eyes open, and be ready to move…

Gawf was lucky getting out of there; when I lived in Atascadero many moons ago getting stuck in town was a sure thing at least once every late summer/early fall.

  10. Robert Says:

@cary – Botan Ichihara: Thanks Brudda, we appreciate the concern and the prayers… Look around you will see I REALLY need the PRAYERS! LOL

  11. cary - Botan Ichihara Says:

I’ve been watching this one on the news (yes, I actually remember WHICH CHANNEL the news is on…) and I’ve been telling TMBWitW that we should perhaps clear some floor space, since a bunch of SoCal bloggers and their families may need sleeping bag space…

  12. Bloviating Zeppelin Says:

Ranando: I’m beginning to think you’re correct.

Robert: are you sufficiently far away from the fires that you’re not threatened?
